Clarkrange Loses in First Round at State

Many expected the Clarkrange vs Greenfield matchup as a matchup of the two best teams in the tournament. Clarkrange began with an 8-0 lead before Greenflield called a timeout. After the timeout, Greenfield could do no wrong. By the end of the quarter Greenfield had outscored the Lady Buffaloes 19-2 for a 19-10 lead. Nothing went Clarkrange’s way as Greenfield was on top 36-14, outscoring Clarkrange 36-6 in a shocking first half.

In the second half the Lady Buffaloes settled down and played a far better game but could not overcome Miss Basketball Chloe Moore’s 24 points, the team’s height, 8 three’s, and excellent 51.4% shooting. The Lady Buffaloes, normally an excellent three point shooting team, made just 4 of 23 attempts. They also only shot 33.3% for the game, but were 90% on free throws.

Kassie Monday led the team with 16 points. Also: Gracie Bush 2, Kaylee Monday 10, Reece Stover 9, Chloe Howard 3, Lexie Pierce 3, Makenzie Pyle 2.

While the loss was disappointing, the Lady Buffaloes return 3 starters, and will be looking to return to Murfreesboro once again.

York Loses Substate to Brainerd
The York Dragons travelled to Chattanooga to play Brainerd in the Substate game with the winner advancing to the state tournament.
York took an early 6-2 lead, and after Brainerd sank two free throws, the Dragons  scored to go up 8-4. They then went up by 6 before the Panthers rallied to tie the game at 14 all.
Noah Smith’s two free throws gave the York the lead again but a late three by Brainerd gave them a 17-16 lead after one quarter.
Noah began the 2nd quarter draining a three to put the Dragons back on top. Ahead 21-17, the Dragons saw the Panthers cut it to one on a three. A Roger Meadows’ three put them up by 4 and after the Panthers missed a shot, Noah scored to make it 26-20.
Ahead 27-24, the Dragons missed a shot inside, Brainerd grabbed the ball and scored…27-26. They then went ahead 29-27 and took a 30-27 lead into the locker room at the half.
Meadows scored to cut it to 30-29 to start the third quarter before the Panthers went ahead by 5 at 34-29. Cole Smith’s three cut it to 34-32. The Dragons soon retook the lead when caleb Christianson hit a three pointer for a Dragon 38-36 lead.
The quarter ended 40-38 York.
York scored first to go up by 4 in the final frame, but the Panthers came back to tie the game. Nick Smith put York back on top, but again the Panthers tied the game.  With under 2 minutes to go Brainerd took the lead. With the Panthers head 49-46, York had one last shot at tying the game, but their three pointer was off and Brainerd took the win.
The Dragons lose Landrick Leffew, Cole Smith, Caleb Christianson, and Case Moody, to graduation, but with have another strong team next year. Congratulations on an outstanding season!

Clarkrange Beats Moore County in Substate 57-37

A full house on Saturday night saw the Lady Buffaloes easily beat Moore County (13-21) by a score of 57-37.
The early going saw the game tied at 2-2, with Moore Co going ahead on a three pointer 3-2. The threes weren’t dropping for the Lady Buffaloes early,  helping Moore County stay in the game. After a Clarkrange steal Gracie Bush scored followed by a Kaylee Monday three…8-3.  Her next three made it 13-5 with the quarter ending 15-9, Clarkrange.
Kaylee stole the ball to start the 2nd quarter, with Kassie Monday scoring. With the score 21-11, Moore Co hit a three, then scored again to cut it to a 5 point game at 21-16.
But another Kaylie Monday three and one by Lexie Pierce helped the Lady Buffaloes pull away for a 29-18 lead at the half.
Before and throughout the game the fans enjoyed the performance of the exceptional Clarkrange band.
Cheerleaders led both sides in plenty of school spirit, and even though greatly outnumbered by Lady Buffalo fans, Moore County let their presence be known.
in the 3rd quarter, by the time Reece Stover drained a three, the Lady Buffaloes were ahead by a score of 36-20. She followed her score with a steal which soon led to a Chloe Howard score. Kassie Monday’s three upped the score to 44-24 with the quarter ending 44-25.
Kassie began the final quarter with a three pointer and Chloe added another making it 50-27. Their biggest leads were by 25 points at 52-27 and 55-30.
They will now play in the TSSAA State Tournament at Murfreesboro on Thursday at 2:45 pm against defending state champion Greenfield. They are in the tougher bracket and if they win on Thursday, they are expected to meet once beaten Loretto on Friday at 4:30 pm. The Championship game is Saturday at 4pm.

Last night’s games:
Clarkrange for all intents and purposes wrapped up the 6A championship with a 63-38 rout of 2nd place Clay Co. They are now 23-3 and have moved to #2 in the AP high school basketball poll.
Pickett County, after a very poor performance at Clay County on Friday, rolled over Monterey going ahead 58-4 at the half with subs seeing a great deal of playing time. They won 78-11. They dropped from #7 to #10 in the AP Poll. PC is now 17-4. Monterey is 1-23.
Clay County moved up to #7 in the poll but their 63-38 loss to Clarkrange was not recorded before the poll was taken.  Clay Co is now 20-6.
Red Boiling Springs has about wrapped up 4th place with their 65-34 win over Gordonsville. They are now 19-8 while Gordonsville is 10-13.
Trousdale County had an easy win over winless Jackson co 69-31. They are now 14-11, while Jackson Co is 0-22.
DeKalb Co is 17-6 now with their win over Cannon Co. 13-11…66-55.
Macon Co. is now 20-5 after beating Livingston 9-13, 60-43. Macon Co remains at #5 in the AP Poll.
Upperman had an easy win over Watertown. The Lady Bees are 22-3, while Watertown is  7-17. Upperman is #1 again in the AP Poll.
York Institute is 10-11 after beating Smith County 7-14, 56-41.
In boys’ action:
Clay County 23-2 should have no problem becoming the district champion again with their 63-47 win over Clarkrange. The Buffaloes, 10-16 gave them all their could handle at Clay Co, but the Bulldogs were too much last night. The Bulldogs remain #3 in the AP Poll.
Trousdale County won a barnburner at Jackson Co 62-61. They are now 11-14, while Jackson Co is 8-17 and in last place in 6A.
Monterey took an early lead only to see the Bobcats take a 3 point lead with the ball and time running out. A walk gave Monterey the ball, they scored, and soon pulled away on free throws to up their record to 21-6.
Red Boiling Springs won at home over Gordonsville in a battle for 3rd place. RBS is now 19-7 while Gordonsville is 13-10.
Upperman was upset at Watertown knocking them out of 1st place with York. They lost 55-45 and are now  19-5 and 8-3 for 3rd place. York and Livingston are tied for 1st at 9-2.
Livingston Academy 17-9 won at home, 74-60 over Macon County 9-16. They will host York for the championships on February 5th.
York Institute 16-4, won big over Smith County 1-19, 79-45. At 9-2 in the district, their showdown at Livingston next week will be the biggest game of the season. York isn’t ranked in the AP Poll but are ranked 12th  on Coacht.

Monterey 1-21 (1-9)
Jackson County 0-20 (0-10)

Looking at the upcoming games, this is a prediction of final standings:

6A Boys

Clay Co. 14-0…but they could still lose one, maybe even two.
Monterey 11-3 …They may win the rest of their games. They have 2nd place sewed up.
RBS 8-6…They could fall behind Gordonsville, but with their big guy, should capture 3rd.
Gordonsville 7-7…Hard to tell who will be 4th and 5th
Trousdale Co 7-7 …This team is up and down but only lost to Clay Co by 4.
Clarkrange 4-10 …They played Clay closely and I wouldn’t count them out.
Pickett Co 3-11…Pickett Co plays great at home but not so much on the road…they are very young.
Jackson Co. 2-12…It is hard to see them climbing out of last place but might tie with Pickett Co or jump to 7th.

6A Girls

Clarkrange 13-1…I can’t see them losing to Clay Co at home.
Clay Co 12-2…I can’t see them losing at home to Pickett Co.
Pickett Co 11-3…They had an 8 point lead on Clay Co at home and had to come back to win.

Friday’s Games:
Girls’ Games
Pickett County 16-3 at Clay County 19-5…Pickett Co had a 9 point lead at home but had to come back from 6 down for the 1 point win. Clay Co. should be the winner at home.

Jackson County 0-20 at Gordonsville 9-12  The Tigerettes should hand Jackson co another loss.

Clarkrange 20-3 at Red Boiling Springs 17-7  While this is at RBS, this one won’t be close.

Monterey 1-21 at Trousdale County 12-11  Trousdale Co should win handily.

Macon County 19-5 at Cannon County 13-9   A win by Cannon Co would be a huge upset.

Smith County 6-13 at Livingston Academy 9-16 LS should win at home.

York Institute 9-10 at Upperman 20-3 Upperman is the number #1 team in the state and are at home.

DeKalb County 15-6 at Watertown 7-15 DeKalb Co should win this one on the road.

Boys’ Games

Pickett County 10-11 at Clay County 21-2   Pickett Co lad at the half at home, but this one won’t be close.

Jackson County 8-15 at Gordonsville 12-9  The Tigers should roll.

Clarkrange 10-13 at Red Boiling Springs 17-7 This one won’t be easy for RBS and a Buffalo win might happen.

Monterey 19-6 at Trousdale County 10-13  This could be a tough one for Monterey, but they should win at Trousdale Co

Macon County 9-14 at Cannon County 9-14   The Lions would have to be favored at home.

Smith County 1-17 at Livingston Academy 15-9  LA should have no trouble at home.

York Institute 15-3 at Upperman 18-4   This is the big game of the night. York won in overtime at home and the Bees are fighting for a share of 1st place. This is the game to see! At York, the Dragons saw a good lead slip away in the last minutes to send the game into overtime. But, in overtime it was the Dragons prevailing!

DeKalb County 3-18 at Watertown 15-7   Watertown should win this one easily.
